The posh space is filled with globe-trotting decor and is the setting for New American fare & cocktails. It often hosts DJs and other live performers to make your experience extra memorable. Every square inch of this space is loaded with rich details and luxurious furnishings. We are proud to have contributed a number of major players in the design scheme.

One of our show stoppers you see immediately upon entering Beatnik includes the set of overhead bar shelving pieces made of brass (that also double as mood lighting). They were specially aged and patinated to look as though they have withstood many years and a leaky ceiling. This is a design detail we were thrilled to execute... We are in love with the drips!

Directly below is the brass bar top we fabricated. This piece is extra custom! Because brass sheets come in standard sizes and the bar is very long, there was no way for us to clad the counter without seams. To make the seams less of a necessary evil and more of a design element, we transformed them into puzzle-piece-like edges, designed by us. Then, we hand nailed the nailhead details around the edges. Combined with the aging process brass is destined to undergo, this bar top has such a one of a kind, antiqued, and handmade feel.

We also fabricated two brass drink rails with custom water-jet cut out designs, as well as a floating brass shelf that bends with the contours of the wall it's mounted to (see below). As you can see, the shelf is styled to perfection with a row of potted succulents and romantic candles.

The final item we fabricated are two foot rails with ornate details.

Have you been to Beatnik and been inspired by the elegant decor? This job (completed back in July) was definitely a challenge, but the result was jaw-dropping... That's how we know are growing as artisans; We're pushing our limits, learning new things, and getting the RADDEST projects done!

First, we had to get the design approved by a structural engineer. In order to support the very heavy staircase (and more importantly, the people walking up it everyday), steel beams were necessary. We achieved the "floating" aspect of this design by hiding the beams in an existing wall. This counteracted the weight of the staircase.

The zig zags you see below are the stair stringers, which make up the inside structure of the stairs themselves. When we posted photos of these stringers on Instagram, many of our followers told us they hoped we were going to keep them exposed! And while that wasn't apart of this scheme, we agree exposed stringers could make for a very interesting design.

Finally, the landing, steel treads, steel risers, and steel railings were added, and then all was painted black with industrial paint to ensure longevity. It took a lot of labor, but we are SO proud of this project. Let us know what you think about this staircase below!

See you on Instagram!

-Wayward Machine Co

Aged and Etched Brass Menu Cases, Fabricated by Hand

Located in the Palazzo in Las Vegas hides Rosina, a sexy cocktail bar serving handcrafted classics and champagne at the push of a button.. our button! We got to tour their super old shop, which has been in operation since 1922! Once the stamping process gave the halves of the cases their shape (the curved lips around the edges), it was time to cut and file the piano hinges that would hold the halves together.

Finally, our team then welded all the pieces together. This was tedious work, as the alignment had to be absolutely perfect. We also fabricated tabs to hold the menu papers in place and a notch on each menu for easy opening.

Then, it was time to patina. The designer requested an aged brass look, so we used a custom mixture from Sculpt Nouveau to create the antique finish. Finally, we sent the order of 60 cases to be etched with the Rosina emblem backed by a decadent Gatsby-like pattern.

We can't wait to see photos of the menus in the space. Located at Chicago + Ashland, Beatnik features a world fusion of decor, food and drinks. We lended our talents to the all brass bar with brass nail head details and puzzle piece like edges. All projects start with the raw materials and a plan. Featured above is a small piece of the very large sheets of brass and the bar top drawing. The drawings

A couple weeks ago we finished a very fun and challenging project that we are extremely proud of, the brass bar top for Beatnik Bar and Restaurant.

The drawings called for clean cut edges that pieced together like a puzzle. We choose this approach because we were trying to avoid the typical seams that sheets like these have when they but up against one another. Sheets of brass come in standard sizes and the bar top was too long for just one sheet so we had to address the seams in a creative way.

We wanted the wood bar top structure to be completely wrapped in brass which meant breaking the edges to provide crisp 90 degree angles. We also had to take into account the step down for the drink rails and how much "wrap around" material we needed.

Because the seam details were so unique and well addressed we wanted to highlight them even more. We did this by outlining each seam with brass nail heads. This also added an antique handmade feel. From right out of the gate we had a good understanding of the transformations this brass would take over time. The client knew, and was very excited about the aging process. The brass nail heads would just offer more surface area that would patina over the upcoming years.

Adding the nails was a fun part of the project. Each team member tackled a seam and the repetitive motions provided a nice break from the rush that we normally experience in the shop. Sometimes its nice to sit down, laugh with your coworkers/friends and hammer 500 nails.

We knew that we had an awesome opportunity to do something amazing with this project. We were allowed more creativity and freedom than we have been before and this project was the perfect level of challenging to really push us to problem solve and provide a unique show stopper of a piece.

We figured while we were at it we would design and fabricate a completely custom and unique to that bar, drink rail. Drink rails are usually pretty standard and do not feature any major design choices. We couldn't imagine pairing the brass bar top with a standard drink rail. We took design elements of the space and incorporated them into a custom cut drink rail that will only ever be featured in Beatnik. This is an element we will be able to provide other clients in the future but this design is Beatnik's.

We decided early on that the best way to get a tightly fitting bar top that was made up of multiple pieces of brass is to fabricate it in the shop and transport it in one piece. We called up a handful of friends and we all took the trip.

Our good friend Jason brought his trailer and we wrapped it up tight.

It was a nerve wracking install because the bar top was so large but getting it there in one piece was absolutely the right choice. We couldn't have done it without a little help from our friends tho.

This all brass bar top was one of our most fun projects so far. If you would have asked us how fun it was while we were fabricating it, our answer may have been a little different. It was a challenging and stressful project because we had a vision we needed to bring to life. It all came together in the end and we are very proud of the end results.

If you haven't made time to stop by Beatnik, make it happen sooner than later. Snap a pic of your cocktail on the bar and shoot us a picture!

#WAMCOWORKDAY Episode 018

Curious whats happening in the shop? Interior design firm, Roman and Williams designed the interior after the hotel was purchased by AJ Capital Partnership in 2012. The interior design mimics the exterior architecture and ornate detailing, especially noted in the second floor lounge.

The building was built in 1893 by Henry Ives Cobb as a Venetian Gothic Palace and its current facade stands strong as a powerful architectural structure. There's a variety of restaurants and bars within the hotel, including Cindy's - the roof top bar that is a prime time place for a stunning view of Chicago's Millenium Park, the famous Cloud Gate sculpture, Maggie Daly Park, the Art Institute, and more. The second floor houses a large lounge where you can find people set up with a cocktail and a laptop, and the large game room that was modeled after the olds men club that historically existed in CAA until 2007.

"Originally founded by a collection of families synonymous with American sport and athletic commerce (such as Wrigley, Comiskey, and Spalding) and architecturally developed during the Columbian Exposition, The C.A.A. was almost lost to plans of demolition in 1997-- all but save the original façade." - Roman and Williams

The custom millwork and metal details throughout the lounges and game room are undecipherable from old interior architecture, mixed with contemporary lighting that seamlessly blends to create a hip new environment in a historical setting. When comparing the old archival photos of the building to the new, you can see the homage that Roman and Williams paid to the old interior design and architecture, with a more modern spin.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT: BEATNIK

Last week marked the opening of one of our biggest projects yet, Beatnik - the new sexy fusion restaurant at Chicago and Ashland in West Town. Bonhomme hospitality took on the space and transformed it into an exotic lounge decorated with historic lighting, millwork, and stunning accents. It's an absolute must spot for an elevated loungey cocktail and a bite from a (mouth-watering) world fusion menu.

Wayward took on the bar portion of the restaurant - we were honored to design and fabricate a 19ft bar with custom seam details, drink rails, overhanging tapered shelving, a foot rail, and custom designed detailed panels for the face of the bar. Brass, metal bending, hammering, and water jetting were the name of the game for this project. Our seam detail on the bar incorporated a close up from the perforated metal that sits within the shelving units above the bar. We have never seen or fabricated an entirely brass clad bar top but we took on the challenge.

This was definitely a "team work makes the dream work" project over at Wayward and we're so happy to have a staple moment in this new beautiful space.

Make sure to head on over and have a magic cocktail at Beatnik at the bar! The event's main hub is the Chicago Cultural Center, who will be hosting a variety of programmed events and performances. Over 140 architects will be participating in this years biennial, continuing the legacy of Chicago's epic architectural history.

The biennial kicks off on September 16th in conjunction with Expo Chicago, one of Chicago's largest contemporary art fairs held at Navy Pier, and will be active through early January of 2018. A list of anchor sites will also be participating in the event including Depaul Art Museum, National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, National Museum of Mexican Art, Hyde Park Art Center, Dusable Museum of African American History, and Beverly Art Center.

Chicago as a city is somewhat of an architecture museum. Downtown houses some of the most renowned structures from architecture's most historic players, and contemporary architects continue to design ground breaking work. It's the perfect stage for a celebration of both the history of architecture and it's current terrain (hence "Make New History" as the events theme). Not only can architects share new work and explore ideas but the biennial is opens wide arms to the greater public.

The extensive programming surrounding the event is definitely what goers need to tap into. There will be a series of high profile lectures, film screenings coordinating with the Chicago International Film Festival, forums, pin-up exhibitions, and a variety of partner programs. We narrowed down our top 5 have-to-go programs that will be taking a place during the fair to give you some footing on a wonderfully overwhelming event.

1) SO-IL & Ana Prvački: L’air pour l’air

When: Saturday, September 16th 4-7pm

Where: Garfield Park Conservatory

What: In concurrence with architect Francois Perrin's installation at Garfield Park Conservatory's Palm House, architects SO–IL and artist Ana Prvački will stage a poetic collaboration called L’air pour l’air. They have created an ensemble of air-filtering mesh enclosures, designed to be worn by musicians playing a composition for wind instruments by the composer Veronica Kraussas. The musical piece will debut during the Biennial's opening week and the public will then be invited to learn more about mask/shelter enclosures, which are inspired by the plants in the Conservatory, during ongoing educational sessions taking place throughout the Biennial. The project touches on the continuities between people, objects, and nature through a medium as ubiquitous as air.

2) The Neue Nationalgalerie

When: Thursday, November 30th 6:30-9:00pm

Where: Chicago Cultural Center

What: Directed by Ina Weisse (2017)

Beautifully filmed in black-and-white, this documentary chronicles the history and renovation of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the last building designed by Mies van der Rohe. With fascinating insights into the original building process and intimate interviews with van der Rohe himself, the film also skillfully connects Berlin’s post-WWII reconstruction project with the museum’s more recent renovations. A fitting tribute to Mies’ work and a cinematic exercise in simplicity that would make him proud.

3) Gerard + Kelly: Modern Living

When: Saturday, September 16th 1:00pm-7:30pm

Where: Farnsworth House (shuttles provided)

What: multidisciplinary artists Gerard & Kelly will present a new chapter of their site-specific project, Modern Living, with performances September 16 at the iconic Farnsworth House in nearby Plano, IL, designed in 1945 by Mies van der Rohe for Edith Farnsworth. Initially a pioneer of modernist architecture, commissioning Mies to design a radical statement for living, Farnsworth famously found the transparency of the house unlivable. These performances build upon the first two chapters of Modern Living at the Schindler House in West Hollywood, California, and Phillip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, in which Gerard & Kelly used the architecture as choreography for intimate relationships. At the Farnsworth House, Gerard & Kelly create a performance score that explores “the juxtaposition of one WO and one MAN” in temporary constellations occupying the interior and exterior spaces of the site, reflecting on the condition of solitude.

4) Matter / Structure / Architecture: A Conversation with Yasmil Raymond and Tomas Saraceno

When: Thursday, October 5th 6:00-8:00pm

Where: Chicago Cultural Center

What: Berlin-based Argentinian artist Tomás Saraceno creates large-scale installations informed by his ongoing research into the worlds of art, architecture, natural sciences, astrophysics, and engineering. Join us for a conversation between Saraceno and MoMA curator Yasmil Raymond, in which she will delve into the artist’s work and current ideas and interests. Presented by the Arts, Science & Culture Initiative and the Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry at UChicago, the Chicago Architecture Biennial, and the Goethe-Institute Chicago.

5) Making History - Frank Lloyd Wright at the Global Crossroads: Chicago / Tokyo / NYC / LA

When: Thursday, November 16th 6:00-7:30pm

Where: Chicago Cultural Center

What: Ken Tadashi Oshima, president of the Society of Architectural Historians and Professor of Architecture at the University of Washington discusses with Biennial Artistic Directors Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, the global design practice of Frank Lloyd Wright in "making history" in the contemporary context. Building on new findings from the 2017 Museum of Modern Art exhibition Frank Lloyd Wright at 150: Unpacking the Archive, the discussion with Johnston and Lee will focus on precedents and parallels with the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. This event is organized by the Society of Architectural Historians, a nonprofit membership organization that promotes the study, interpretation, and conservation of architecture, design, landscapes, and urbanism worldwide. SAH serves a network of local, national, and international institutions and individuals who, by profession or interest, focus on the history of the built environment and its role in shaping contemporary life. Furniture, like clothing, has to be designed to fit and compliment the human body while maintaining its own integrity and agency. A dress can imitate the form of a chair, a fabric color can inspire the use of specific material in a light fixture. How does the framework of physical human comfort constrict and challenge fashion and furniture designers? How do we value the importance of utilitarian function when it comes to fashion and design?

While seeking constant inspiration, we've been investigating the minimalist forms in fashion; their structures and material play. And therefore, we have been approaching material with savvy thought - how to employ design to make silk look tough and steel look soft, etc. etc.

In the production of an unreleased documentary about the influence of fashion on design and vice versa, Charles Miers at Rizolli commented,"There are fashion designers who have significantly influenced interior design, and I think I see more of that direction: fashion to design than design to fashion." Because fashion cycles in an accepted series of trends and phases, it can more easily inspire design with its forever fresh new moves and moments. Furniture and interior design on the other hand, work with a more seriously implied boundary of timelessness. Interiors and furnishings have to withstand trends because of their permanent nature.

We aim to design and build furniture that can keep its beauty through time, but also work within form / function in a way that can inspire designers in different industries.

For this post, we combined minimalist steel furniture with fashion work that when paired together, defines true harmony.

QUI HAO | TACK END TABLE BY UHURU

SECONDA 602 CHAIR BY MARRIO BOTTA FOR ALIAS | PHOTO BY ALEK ZIVKOVIC

CHAIR BY PEDRO PUALO VENZON | PHOTO BY NOELL OSZVALD

IMG BELOW: RICK OWENS LILIES | ATLAS BARSTOOL BY NEW TENDENCY

URBAN PHILOSOPHY CHAIR BY | OPUS 2 BY

A PERFECT PAIR: CONCRETE + STEEL

The level of harmony achieved when concrete and steel are incorporated in a single design is, well, drop dead sexy.
